You never know how vital your information is until it’s gone, or at least until you have to work to find it again. In education technology, reliability is more than a buzzword; it represents real protection against data hacking, server failures, and other problems that come with self-hosting a learning management system (LMS).
That was the challenge for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The university had used Moodle as its third-party-hosted LMS since 2009, but had begun to experience technical problems with uptime, response time, and a system failure that impacted teachers and students. Because Moodle would upgrade in large batches, downtime was common throughout campus. “With slow response times and page loads in Moodle, it became untenable every time there was an update. We once spent an entire summer having to put out fires,” said Jeff Meier, the technical systems lead for the university’s LMS and related academic technologies.
UNC Charlotte switched to Canvas and cloud-based reliability in the spring of 2016. Working with Canvas presented new possibilities for innovation through change, increased technical reliability, and freed up IT staff for other projects. In short, UNC Charlotte found switching to the cloud to be comfortable, convenient, and extremely beneficial.
